Feng Shui for the Bedroom

Our Blog is Open.  Please visit our new Blog on Word Press for useful articles and discussions on Feng Shui for Balanced Living!

The Bedroom is the most important room according to Feng Shui…as we spend as much as a third of our life sleeping there!  The priority of the bedroom should be a deep, restful and relaxing sleep. I bring you this information, not as an expert, but rather based on my 12 years of studying and practicing Feng Shui. While some Feng Shui authorities and practitioners disagree on aspects of Feng Shui (as you will come to discover when reading various books), below are some generals rules I have applied to my own personal home.

General Rules based on my readings of many authors:

  • Avoid clutter at all costs!
  • Practioners disagree on the issue of plants.  Some say to avoid plants altogether in the bedroom; other say a few artificial or real plants are fine.  If real, fuzzy leaves are best. If artificial, do make sure they are dust free and cleaned regularly.  Specifically dried flowers are not recommended unless replaced two times a year and spiky should be avoided.
  • Televisions should be avoided or at least covered at night (I ignore this one)
  • Clocks in the bedroom should be silent, not ticking loudly.  Position digital clocks a few feet from your body and never near your head when sleeping.
  • A few books in the bedroom are fine, but it should not look like a library
  • If you have a “relationship” bed, multiples of two are good e.g. 2 night stands, 2 side rugs, 2 lamps, etc.
  • Lamps should have muted colors and no sharp lines.  Simple or fancy is fine.
  • Fountains are most likely too busy for the bedroom and a restful sleep and never should be placed near the head of the bed.  Water in general should be avoided in the bedroom.
  • Avoid sleeping under a window
  • Never sleep with your feet pointing at the bathroom or at the entry door of the bedroom. If you sleep with your head pointing at a bathroom, place a small mirror behind your bed (it’s not necessary to see the mirror, you can place it on the floor or behind the headboard) and face the mirror toward the bathroom (backwards).
  • Position your bed so that you can see the entry door.  If that is not possible, place a mirror strategically which allows you to view the door from the bed, but that doesn’t directly face you while in bed.
  • Look at angles of everything in the room.  Employ Feng Shui cures, such as hanging crystals between your bed and the pointed item (Poison Arrows). This includes pointed edges of bed tables which may criss-cross the bottom of your bed while sleeping.
  • Avoid having the slats from Venetian blinds angled toward you while in the bedroom
  • When positioning your bed, be aware of what is above (upper floor) and below the bed.  Avoid sleeping beneath a toilet, washing machine, or cooking equipment.
  • The bed you sleep on is important!  If you sleep on a bed with a metal frame, then tie 9in ribbons to the metal legs of the bed to avoid negative chi (energy).  I also keep a red sheet beneath the mattress cover to fend off negative energy from the innersprings of the mattress.
  • Headboards that are angular ^^^ in shape are not recommended.
  • As a general rule: Look for bedroom items and furniture which give the feel of soft, flexible, comfortable and curvy.  This helps in avoiding sharp objects or Poison Arrows.
  • Heavy window treatments are recommended including: excessive fabric, valances, tassels, and fringe.
  • Do not store things under the bed
  • Wall to wall carpeting is fine.  If you would like to a beautiful area rug, make sure it does not slip.  Add a special pad that grips the rug to hold it in place.
  • Add fragrance or aromatherapy to the bedroom
Also, there are some great articles on Feng Shui throughout the internet, but I always suggest going to some trusted sources!  Try following  this HGTV linK to an article about the "Sleepless Bedroom."  http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/dc_design_feng_shui/article/0,,HGTV_3371_5634809,00.html
